Referral programs can be an effective way to increase customer loyalty and encourage word-of-mouth marketing. Here are the instructions for setting up this program in BON.
1. Set up referral rewards:
Go to BON > Point programs > Referral program > Click on the “Setup” button:
Next, click on the Edit button to set up the Referral rewards:
Tip: You can select different reward types for referrers and referred friends in your store:
There are 2 types of referral rewards, with points or with discount codes.
Reward with points
To select this reward type, click on the drop-down menu of the Type section:
There are 2 points-rewarding types: Fixed amount of points and Increments of points.
- Fixed amount of points: Customers will be given a specific amount of points after a successful referral.
Ex: You set up the rule that a referrer can receive 50 points as a referral reward.
John has 30 points. After a successful referral, John earned 50 points more. His new point balance is 80 points.
- Increments of points: The amount of points that customers get depends on their current total points.
Ex: You set up the rule that a referred friend can receive 50% increments of points.
John has 100 points after a successful referral > John earned 50% of his current point amount = 50 points.
His new point balance is 150 points.
Reward with discount code
In the Reward type menu, you can find 4 other rewarding options for discount codes:
- Amount discount: For example, a 50$ discount code
Note: The currency in BON will be synced to your default store currency (in Shopify).
- Percentage discount: For example, a 50% discount code.
- Free Shipping discount
- Free Product discount: discount which can only be applied to a specific product, of your choice.
After select the reward discount type, you can also choose to activate other discount details:
- Minimum Requirement: The minimum amount customer needs to buy, to be able to apply the discount code.
Ex: John the referrer got a discount coupon and the minimum purchase value for this discount is 10$.
John has to buy at least 10$ to use the discount code.
- Applied to: Select a collection(s) to which you want this discount reward to apply.
- Reward expiration: Set an expiration date for this discount.
This option would be available from the Basic plan.
- Combination: Set whether this code can be combined with other discount codes.
This option would be available from the Basic plan.
After you finish all the reward setup, click Save.
2. Social sharing for referrers
This feature allows your customers to share their referral links on social media. in Referral program settings, select “Edit” button for social sharing options:
- Tick the checkbox in front of each sharing option to enable it
- You can edit the content you want customers to share with
Note: Facebook does not let third-party apps (like BON) interfere with their content, so you will not be able to prepare the message for Facebook sharing. Customers will do it themselves.
3. Referral pop-up
You can also use this feature to make the referral program more noticeable for customers. It would display as a pop-up above the widget, so that the customers can click on it.
In the referral setting, select “Referral pop-up”:
There are many settings to customize:
- Status (whether the pop-up is activated or not).
- Type
– Bubble teaser (a small pop-up with a short caption) – see the preview on the right.
– Notification pop-up:
- To make the pop-up match your store’s brand, use the options to change the color and the icon:
- The referral pop-up message, including the title and description, can also be edited:
Note: If you’d like to display this pop-up in more than 1 default language, check out our multi-language display option, which is available from the Basic plan.
- Next, you can set up the referral pop-up’s frequency. The referral pop-up will be constantly displayed until the customers press the ‘x’ button to close. If the setup looks like in the screenshot, it will continue to re-open 3 times in total after closing the referral pop-up.
Note: If the customers reload the page/open the website in other browsers or private/incognito mode, then the frequency-time will be reset.
For example: Customer John browsed your website on Chrome. He closed the pop-up once, but he still saw it 2 more times. (3 times in total and it reached the max number).
After that, he changed the browser to Opera, and he would still see the referral pop-up.
Please consider this feature carefully before setting it up.
The referral pop-up can also be hidden on a specific page(s). Select the “Show pop-up on all pages except” > enter the URL(s) > click Save.
4. Activate the referral program
To make your referral program visible to customers and allow them to refer your store, please note that the referral status must be activated:
5. Fraud detection
Our referral program prevents cheating by monitoring IP addresses. The IP addresses of the referrer and the referred must not match. Specifically, if 10 referral links are recorded from the same IP address within the last 7 days, the IP will be blocked to prevent fraud.
